Prognosis for a distended bladderI am a 26 year-old male who was diagnosed with having a distended bladder about a decade ago. What prompted my seeking medical attention then were the following symptoms when/after urinating:
-Low pressure -Unfocused stream -Excessive dribbling _AFTER_ urination After visiting 2 urologists to have my urinary track and bladder examined visually (with a camera on the end of tube) for defects (there weren't any), I went to a hospital where a catheter pumped saline into my bladder until it hurt. The amount pumped into would caused agony in most individuals, but not me, because I have distended bladder. The doctor indicated that 1) I was consuming more liquids than typical (I had measured every urination the week before the procedure) and 2) that the cause of the distension was behavioral. I don't recall the exact term he used to describe the behavior and he didn't recommend any further treatment, aside from an injunction against excess liquid intake. The symptoms have persisted in the meantime and I've simply dealt with them. Now my question: What is the prognosis for my condition? I fear one day being completely incontinent because my overstretched bladder has finally wore out the nerves or whatever it is that controls urination. Is this a frequent consequence of a distended bladder?
Re: Prognosis for a distended bladderThe real question is our you emptying completely. Assuming no outflow obstruction you could do timed voiding to empty your bladder more frequently thus not over distending it all the time. If you are not emptying completely you could do self catherization, lastly a device called Interstim can be implanted to help poorly functioning bladders which cause non obstructed urinary retention, good luck
Re: Prognosis for a distended bladderyes it could lead to overflow incontinence
Re: Prognosis for a distended bladderThank you.
One more question, could you please translate the following terms into their technical, medical equivalents: distended bladder overflow incontinence unfocused urination stream low urination pressure excessive dribbling after urination excessive thirst or over-consumption of liquids inability to urinate when others are in the room I'm just asking for their translation into medical terminology so that I may investigate their aetiology myself a little more precisely. I have a number of other non-urological conditions whose relationship with my distended bladder I would like to explore, and having the medical terminology would greatly speed my efforts. I greatly appreciate your responses, especially about the possibility of incontinence, as the doctor who originally diagnosed my distended bladder never mentioned it. Thanks.
