Open Breast Biopsy

Post a new topicby satkadeb on Fri Oct 05, 2007 11:55 am

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone has had an open breast biopsy before and what you can tell me about them. Of course I have read information on them on the web but I just wanted to hear about some personal experiences.

I am 25 and found a small lump in my left breast about 2 months ago. I saw my GYN and we waited for me to go through a menstrual cycle to see if it would disappear. It didn't, so I was refered to a breast clinic and surgeon for further follow-up. A week and a half ago I had an ultrasound done and it was inconclusive. The lump did have fluid in it but there was also "debris" in the middle. Has anyone else had an ultrasound show that? They recommended a core biopsy but then when I went back to the surgeon he thought it best to just remove the entire lump. They are telling me not to worry, that it most likely isn't cancer but there is still that little voice in my head that says that it could be. I have a family history of cancer - Mom and Grandmother.

So, if anyone has been in a similar situation it would be great to hear from you. What could "debris" mean? What is an open biopsy like? I know that I will be under local ansthestia (sp?).

knowing ultrasound features very well, i say it is common to have breast cysts. not so common is to have breast cyst with debris but it still happens.breast cysts with debris are usually benign. they do not have the ultrasound appearance of a malignant tumor therefore, we are confident they will turn out okay. however, because they are not simple cysts, to be 100% sure and safe instead of 99% sure, a removal of the lesion or a drainage is recommended to protect the patient from the very small chance it won't be benign and to protect the doctor from liabilty. at 25, it is very rare to have malignant breast cancer, however, it does happen. the cases i have seen the ultrasound appearance is not that of a cyst with internal debris but appearance of typical malignant masses which you are not describing. i say the odds are in your favor so you should relax a bit and not jump to worst case scenario.

In the not so distant past, biopsy and mastectomy were done as a one-step procedure. The biopsy was performed while the patient was under general anesthesia, and the tissue was immediately sent to the laboratory for analysis. The patient was kept anesthetized until the surgeon received the results. If the lump was malignant, a mastectomy was performed. The one-step procedure is rarely done today, unless the patient is too frail or ill to undergo repeated anesthesia and surgery. Patients have time to discuss treatment options, get a second opinion, and make a decision.

This will help you.
