Percentage of positive biopsies

Post a new topicby bobbimcc on Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:39 pm

I am scheduled for a biopsy in about a week. I'm not sure which procedure they will do but I assume it will be a needle biopsy or a minor incision as my lesion appears to be a calcification rather than a cyst. It is located at the 3 o'clock position in my left breast (away from the mediastinum but closer to lumphy nodes). My question is what percentage of biopsies are found to be positive for breast cancer? (Again, I'm making an assumption, eg. that the percentage is small.) Where do I find this information? Thanks for any information you can provide.

The positive predictive value of a mammogram is all over the place any where from 10 to 94%, it is on the high side if the area is palpable, so there is a significant possibility that the biopsy will be negative. If it should turn out positive at least you know and you can start fighting the cancer, turning a blind eye to reality and in this case the possibility of cancer can lead to death, So take a positive approach and be a survivor if the biopsy should turn out positive, good luck
