Bunions suck

Hey All,
I’m a 20 year old Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer suffering with horrible bunions I’ve had them since I was little and I know mine are from genetic traits as my dad, granddad and great grandad all had them. I am considering surgery in the near future, except as I am very active in my job I am wanting to hear from someone how long it takes to recover fully from the surgery? I would have to stop work for 6 weeks at least which is what is holding me back at the moment. Any...Read the full article

Hi Sally:
I'm twice your age (43) and I've lived with a right foot bunion for 10 years. In my initial consultation, my doctor told me that wearing orthodics would delay surgery for about 20 years. Well, it's been 10 years and I'm scheduled for surgery in 5 days from today. The bunion has also caused a hammertoe next to the big toe, from the pressure to the right side of my foot (this causes numbner/cramping in that toe). I'm also having surgery on that at the same time. The doctor tells me I'll be out of work 6-8 weeks for recovery, and it takes two months for the bone to be fully healed. Although the doctor says I should continue to wear orthodics after surgery, I'm looking forward to no more pain, no more hammertoe and to being able to wear sandals and open toe shoes (at least in the summer).

I will detest being inmobile and inactive during recovery, but I"m sure it will be worth it. I've heard some horror stories from friends/people who returned to their normal activities sooner than recommended, and have regretted it terribly because it took several additional months to recuperate and heal. Apparently, keeping the foot off the ground with no pressure is the key to a speedy recovery. Oh boy!
