Is surgery my only option?

Post a new topicby piscesvirgoannie on Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:23 am

Hi, I'm a 30 year woman who has been having pain in my right foot, mostly on the outside of my big toe, and around the arch. I went to a podiatrist the other day, and within two seconds he was convinced that I had developed a small bunion and that surgery was the only option for treating it. Now being a person who's not a fan of being "put under", I immediately asked if there were any alternative treatment options for bunions and he insisted that there were NONE! I'm not a professional, but I found it highly suspicious for a doctor to jump right to surgery without exploring any other options, and even more strange to insist that there were no other options. I don't have a job where I'm forced to be on my feet all day, I hardly ever where heels, so I'm kinda at a complete loss. Long story short, I refuse to believe that there are no alternative treatments for bunions other than surgery. Can anyone help? What are my options? And shouldn't surgery be a last resort for treatment? HELP!

Hi there. Well if you have a small bunion there are plenty of options. The first thing is that they shoudl fit you with orthotics and give you spacers for your toe. This will help to keep your toe in line without lots of movement. That's what really makes the bunion .........when your bone is not stable and moves back and forth. I think you should most definetly get a second opionion before you get it removed. I have a severe bunion and am now just deciding to have it done. Louise
