Post a new topicby sherocks222 on Tue Nov 18, 2008 3:02 pm

Has anyone been told that the pain they have (esp after 2 yrs) is morton's neroma and is this a typical side effect of a bunionectomy?? Immediatley after my surgery I began having this pain and have had it now for 2 yrs and can hardly walk!

morton's neuroma post bunionectomy is NOT common...a previously undiagnosed neuroma in the space between the 2nd and 3rd toes of the surgical foot is seen once in a while but again should have been evaluated pre-op...pain sub 2nd toe joint after bunion surgery may be related to excessive shortening of the first metatarsal after surgery...this may happen as a result of an improper procedure or an excessive resorption of bone in the course of healing of the first metatarsal...a capsulitis or inflammation of the adjacent joint of the second toe may be seen...2 years down the road it is too late for physical therapy...nsaids may be helpful...biomechanical orthotics may assist in redistributing weight and pressure...i hate to say it but additional surgery may be necessary...consider ultrasound for diagnostic evaluation of the presence of a neuroma...an MRI usually will not ID this type of pathology especially without contrast...steroid injections & alcohol injections, short of surgery are alternatives...
