Post OP ?I am 3 days post op shortening osteotomy 1st metatarsal, cheilectomy, decompression and a taylor's bunionette removal on my right foot. I have a pin in my 5th metatarasal and a pin and screw in my first metatarasal. My first night was uneventful, I slept for the most part through the night. My nights since then have been getting progressively worse. I have been waking up several times a night having to loosen my ace wrap and a throbbing foot. My three toes that are not covered with a dressing are purple both on top and bottom and very puffy plus the top of my foot is black and blue. The pain is not very incredible as I suspected but the swelling I really don't care for. My podiatrist told me to keep myself pumped full of medication for at least 2 days then slowly wean it because he didn't want to see my pain out of control. This is without a doubt the least painful surgery I have had in a long time. I am using crutches when I leave the house but am getting around the house ok with my walking boot. I have been keeping my foot elevated alot. My podiatrist said that my toes shouldn't be discolored like that especially the ones he didn't operate on the ones he operated on are pink as can be. I tried to chicken at the last minute and go home but he wouldn't let me go, lol. How long does the swelling last postoperatively? How long till I can wear my shoes again? How long till I can drive again? I want to go back to work.
Re: Post OP ?Your doctor should answer the questions about normal shoes, returning to work and driving. However, it is common to have bruising in the other toes and blood drains from the area. The throbbing normally means you have been too active and this will add to the swelling and recovery time. You should discuss all of your concerns with your doctor for an accurate assessment durign the heaing period. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
