“normal” to “severe dysplasia” in less than a year and only 23 yrs old

Post a new topicby livingwith on Wed May 14, 2008 3:58 pm

I am 23 years old and I have always gone in for my annual pap smear and my results have always come back normal. I remember hearing stories from other girls that their results were “abnormal” and they need to get a coloscopy. I always felt lucky that I didn’t have to go through that but I guess I jinxed myself.
I recently moved after graduating college and I had to pick a new doctor. I had my pap in feburary and in march I got a call saying that my results were abnormal an...Read the full article

I have also went from normal paps to abnormal. I had mild dysplasia which the docs didnt worry about until after I had my 2nd child and I had severe dysplasia. They did 3 biopsies and it was the high risk stage right before cancer, so my doctor did an emergency LEEP procedure. I was scared and didnt really know what to expect. You are awake the whole time and the nurse tapes a metal strip to your leg to "ground" you. The Dr. numbs the area. Than the Dr. takes a loop rod and electrifies the tissues. It is kinda a burning sensation and at times I wanted to kick the dr. But you cant move or he may cut more than what he should. It lasted about 15 to 20 minutes. They stop the bleeding by putting a mustard looking cream on it. I felt kinda down for about a week and bled off and on but it never was sore or anything like that. However, my results came back that they didnt get all of the bad cells so this Friday I am having the cone biopsy done. I hope your LEEP goes well and they get it all. Good luck to you.

Wow.. both of those stories sound pretty familiar. I am in my late 30s with 2 children. About 15 years ago my paps were coming back abnormal & they did the LEEP then & monitored me closely & I went on to have my 2 children and normal Paps. I am very strict about getting pap smears & about 3 years ago (just prior to my last pregnancy) my pap smear came back abnormal. I was really concerned & thought, here we go again, but went for the 4 month follow ups & the subsequent 2 years worth came back just fine.. until the last one in Dec 07.. came back abnormal, as did the 4 mo follow up in Apr. So on May 7, I had a colpo & was told to follow up in 2 weeks. They called me 4 days later & said to come in within the next day or two. on the 13th, my doc told me I had severe displaysia & she would have to do a LEEP procedure, but would put me under anesthesia.
I am very concerned that I am having to go through this again. This first time, I was not as concerned, but much more naive. My ex husband had a bad habit of sleeping around (one of his many attributes, I am afraid) & it looks as though I am paying for it now as my doctor is concerned about HPV. Problem is, my prior HPV results were negative & I am in a monogomous Christian marriage now.
Needless to say, I am relieved that my worst fears of cancer were not proven, but I am very concerned that it is back & so much more severe this time. The doctor has diagnosed me at CIN III, which, if left untreated would become cancer in 2-5 years. I just hope that this treatment works!!
Good luck & God Bless You with your trials. Hang in there!
