ACID TO TREAT CERVICAL DYSPLASIAI was diagnosed in 2006 after losing my daughter at just five months. I was wondering if that could have caused this to happen. Also, I had a cervical polyp come up after only three months into my pregnancy. I was treated by my doctor with a form of acid. Is this normal?
Re: ACID TO TREAT CERVICAL DYSPLASIAI don't know about using acid to treat a polyp or dysplasia, but I know that when I had an abnormal pap smear, they did a colposcopy (just looking at the area with a high powered colposcope) and in order to see which areas were abnormal, they sprayed the vagina and cervix with a mixture of 3-5% acetic acid. The abnormal cells on the cervix will turn white when they come into contact with the acid. That just allows the doctor to focus on the areas he needs to look at (and possibly biopsy). Acetic acid is basically vinegar - it's the very acid pH that causes the abnormal cells to react. I hope this helps but it might not be what you were asking. The acetic acid is not a *treatment* - just a technique for helping the doctor identify the potential problem areas.
