Cervical dysplasia caused by Mirena?

Post a new topicby kazoo on Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:14 am

Hey guys just kinda hoping for some feedback to see if this has happened to anyone else.
I had a Mirena IUC for 3 years. Had it removed last month because my husband and I are TTC. I had my pap done and three weeks later got the call to come back for a colposcopy. My pap showed moderate to severe dysplasia. I am 28 years old and have never had an abnormal pap. It does not run in my family. Could the Mirena have caused the dysplasia or at least sped up the process? Has anyone else dealt with something similar?
All I know is that I am going crazy waiting for the results of the biopsies that were taken last week and I'm very disappointed in having to wait even longer before TTC again, if we ever can provided it's not cancer.

Hello everyone. Thanks for sharing your stories. I just had a laser treatment done for moderate dysplasia caused by HPV. The truth of the matter is that in 99% of the cases of dysplasia there is a direct association with this virus. About 1% of the cases, I knew, were predominantly caused by smoking and a few other rare factors. However, hearing your stories about how the Mirena seems to have a correlation with cervical dysplasia is quite alarming! It definitely sets the grounds for some serious research. Usually the use of IUD's bears no serious complications; but one of the most frequent ones is ectopic pregnancy. Mirena causing cervical dysplasia sounds very strange to me, and I urge all of you to get a colposcopy and biopsy ASAP to determine the etiology of the problem. Hope everything turns out well for you all :)
