Had bad paps 2 1/2 years ago- don't have insurance now....

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie here and hoping to get some info on cervical dysplasia etc. In April 2005 & May 2005- I had 2 abnormal pap smears from my gynecologist I was told that I was exposed to HPV After a colposcopy the gynecologist mentioned "removing" a small piece of my cervix. She wanted me to keep coming back and be re-papped every 2 months until they came back normal. I went through a divorce a couple of months later in the summer of 2005, and lost my health insurance. So I was unable to go back. I finally went to a public free clinic a year ago in October 2007, and it came back "normal". Since then, I have been experiencing some things that I find odd- that have never happened before. I bleed after sex, I experience cramping in between periods, severe cramping during my periods (to the point that I need to take about 5 ibuprofen to finally get some pain relief.) I just had a pap again today at the same free clinic and I have been bleeding ever since. I asked the doctor if this was normal, and she said: "Oh it's probably from your last period."

My last period was 2 weeks ago, and this is fresh blood. (Sorry for the visual.)

So I guess I must go through the waiting game. I'm just wondering though- this is like a 3rd world free public clinic I have been going to, so I hope and pray this is all accurate. I just find it weird that I am having all of these strange things happening to me.

If anyone knows of any free agencies that offer some assistance in testing, treating cervical problems, this would be appreciated.
Thanks so much for any advice!

My daughter has HPV and moderate dysplasia. I've had bad paps for about 5 years. I've done extensive research. Bleeding after sex is not usually normal unless one is very rough. I would say it would depend on how often it happens....after each time...only once....or every so often. It can signal either nothing at all, or something that needs further investigation...and sooner rather than later. So I joined this forum just to tell you to stay on top of this! Don't let it go, don't play the waiting game.

I'm not sure how old you are but I'm 47 and my periods have gotten worse as I've gotten older. I had some bleeding once in between my periods. Turns out it was hormonal changes. I'm not a doctor but bleeding after your pap is more likely because they are using a brush to scrape cells out of your cervical opening...a very rough thing to do to very delicate tissue. I've had it happen before...more than once. I guess I would consider that they got a very good specimen.

You don't say where you live. I would call a few gynecologists in your area to see if they have any recommendations for you. If they are not willing to give a deep discount to a "cash paying customer" keep calling around to see if you CAN find one who will. Another suggestion is if you are near a large teaching hospital, call them and see if they can help you out. Insurance or not....please do NOT wait this out. And please let me know how it goes. Good luck.

Hello there,

I just finished reading your post and I am glad to hear that your tests are normal again, when i was reading your post a few things came to mind when you were saying about your periods and your cramping, I do not know alot about the abnormal paps as i am just finding out formyself what that all intales, but one thing i do know about is endemetrious, please check this out as you do have alot of the signs for it, the signs of the cramping before and during your periods is a symptom, and irregurlar bleeding is another. Please find a free clinic and get an ultra sound done and that will help alot with finding out what the problem is, if you lived here in canada you would not have that worry, If you can get an ultra sound done plz ask for an internal one also as it shows alot more and gives the doctors more to go on,
Good luck and keep me posted on how things are and if i can give you info i will.

Hi! Try your State Department of Public Health, any Planned Parenthood, local women's health clinics, teaching hospitals, etc. There are options for patients with no insurance. Maybe you just need to try birth control therapy. http://www.plannedparenthood.org
