severe dysplasiaI am 34 years of age and on Thursday I got told that I have Severe Dysplasia. I have already had the leep done and her only method of treating this is to have a hysterectomy She then said that is the only thing I could do to clear this up. Should I go get a second opinion and do you think that this is right for women that have already had the dysplasia. If so, what was your method of treatment.
Thanks
Re: severe dysplasiaI was diagnosed 4 1/2 years with having dysplasia and have since had culposcopies, cryosurgery, leep and have never gone back to a negative pap. Now my doctor wants to do a hysterectomy (which I'm currently scheduled for) but she tells me there is no guarantee that the HPV will not come back. Because of this, I'm not so sure I want to go through with the hysterectomy now. Since I have the strains which are high risk for cancer, I thought the hysterectomy was the solution. I'm 53 and not having any more children at this age. But I have so many questions now. If there's no cervix for the cancer to attack, I've read it could attack the colon or kidneys. If that is the case, I'll never know if there is cancer since paps won't show this. I'm so confused about this now myself.
Re: severe dysplasiaI would suggest to get a second opinion. You need to prepare your questions on paper before you go to the doctor, and remember, no questions are silly questions. Hysterectomy should always be a LAST resort, that is why I suggest a second opinion. I'm a 48 yr old female who had a total abdominal hysterectomy in November of 2006 and I'm STILL recovering and having issues from the surgery. I would not recommend that you agree to this without having all of your information first. Goodluck to you and I hope you get another opinion and can get all of your questions answered before making this very big decision.
Re: severe dysplasiaThanks for the reply. I did go to a holistic doctor for another opinion to see if he thought I should proceed or if anything else could be done. I'm waiting for bloodwork results. He wants to rule out the possibility of something other than the HPV may be causing the dysplasia. I'm even looking into vitamin supplements although he feels the hysterectomy may be the next route to take. I'm scheduled for a vaginal hysterectomy on Good Friday unless something develops at my next appointment on March 5th for the blood results. He did emphasize that although I have the dysplasia it may not ever develop into cervical/uterine cancer if I don't have the surgery. I'd be very interested to know what the complications are that you've encountered post surgery. Maybe I could email you directly if you'd feel more comfortable that way. Time is of the essence on my end and I need to make a knowledgeable final decision. I'm interested in knowing what to expect afterwards. Thanks again for sharing. This is soooo scary.
