Wait 2 years to follow up?I recently went to my gyno for a yearly exam. I then found out that my previous years pap was abnormal but HPV was negative so that didn't notify me of the result. I was shocked that I was not notified but the gyno reassured me that he was following "protocol." Then the second pap came back anormal & HPV negative; I was notified over the phone and the nurse scheduled my colp with biopsy for almost 2 months down the road. After explaining how upset I was the colp was scheduled for the next day. Biopsy came back CIN 1 - low grade. But this is the kicker, he says that he wants to wait 2 years to repeat the pap but continue yearly HPV testing only. I am 38, married for almost 20 years with only 1 lifetime partner and my partner has had 2 life time partners. Does this sound acceptable? Plus I have a horrible family history when it comes to cancer. I'd like to know if anyone else's doc has given similar recommendations. It sounds like too long and not close enough monitoring to me; but I don't want to be a hypochondriac either. Thanks
Re: Wait 2 years to follow up?That is too long to wait. I was recently diagnosed with Vaginal dysplasia as I had a hysterectomy 15 years ago and not much cervix left. I had a colposcopy that came back mild dysplasia. My gynecologist spoke to a gyn-oncologist and recommended pap smears every 6 months for two years until normal. Just to be on the safe side, I am going to have pap smears every 3 months until normal. I am a nurse by the way, and if you are not proactive with your health, the physician will not usually push it. Don't wait two years.
