Chemo and Warfarin?

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Mar 06, 2002 3:21 pm

My mum has just completed her first chemotherapy treatment which has consisted of Cisplatin and Navelbine for non small cell lung cancer She seems to have had every bit of bad luck possible. Severe nausea and vomiting, constipation causing admittance to hospital. Temperature and possible infection. Diahorrea caused by hospital food it seems! Swelling of Varicose vein and possible pulmonary embolism resulting in treatment with heparin and now warfarin. This is all for a woman of 62 who previoulsy has had no serious illness in her life. She is finding it very hard to bear and I am concerned about her continuing treatment. Will being on warfarin make it impossible for her to continue chemotherapy? As it was the doctor was considering making alterations to her chemotherapy drugs. If she can proceed how safe will it be? Is radiotherapy a safer alternative? Thanks for any advice you can give.

The coumadin will have no effect on her ability to receive chemotherapy. Her
tolerance of any other chemo regimen will depend upon what the drug
combination is. In regards to radiation, if she requires chemotherapy then radiation alone is adequate for her treatment. Thank you for using
oncologychannel and good luck.

Since my previous question I have seen my mum's doctor and she has suggested reducing the cisplatin from 80mg to 60mg and only giving the Navelbine on day 1 instead of 1 & 8. However my mum has just come off of metoclopramide given intravenously (was preiously on cyclizine)and has started taking the tablet form. She is again suffering from vomitting but, because of all her complications and the fact that they don't know where to puncture her next, she is reluctanct to have the drip in again. It is now day 19. Do you think that what her doctor is suggesting would have a marked reduction in her sickness next time? Can you suggest any alternatives?
