hormonal treatment vs chemotherapy

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Dec 26, 2001 11:02 am

My sister is suffering from endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The doctor in public hospital said it's stage III, but I considered it as stage IV B because it had been transmitted to rectum. The doctor said that nothing can be done in such an advanced stage, hence the doctor treated it as ovarian cancer Therefore chemotherapy (Taxol) was applied to my sister. The effectiveness of the chemotherapy was highly suspicious. Even the ovarian cancer is under control by Taxol. What about the uterine cancer of my sister ? On the other hand, I consider the tumor origin should be from her uterus instead of ovary.

However, we have seen some messages from NCI of USA and Cancerbacup of the UK that hormonal treatment might be applied to the advanced stage uterine cancer. In this end, we mentioned it to the public hospital doctor. Unfortunately it was declined. They said hormonal treatment would be less effective and too slow. They claimed that hormonal treatment was nothing new and not a magic.

Hope should not end with the assertion of the public hospital doctors. We took my sister to an oncology specialist a couple of days ago for second opinion. After preliminary diagnoses and deliberations, he suggested hormonal treatment might be a good try to my sister. He prescribed a popular progesterone drug, Megace. My sister is now on that drug.

It is unknown to us that how effective will be the hormonal treatment. It might take another two months to see the response. We consider the hormonal treatment because we believe there is no immediate life threatening to my sister. It took long time to reach the Stage IV B of uterine cancer. We don't understand why the doctors in the public hospital refused to try hormonal treatment since the effectiveness can be tested easily in hospital. Is it a receptor test can be made for the effectiveness of hormonal treatment ? Is hormonal treatment too slow ? It is understood that hormonal treatment is not a replacement of surgry, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy What treatment should be made in parallel working with the hormonal treatment ?

Apart from the standard treatment, chemotherapy and hormonal treatment, my sister is currently taking some supplements such as Lucidum and LCE (Shark Liquid Cartilage Extract). Please advise your understanding on LCE and its usefulness in beating cancers.

Thanks in advance your reply. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yours truly,

Raymond

Hormonal therapy or chemotherapy are both adequate treatments for the
disease you describe. Chemotherapy works faster but with more side effects;
hormonal therapy is slower to work but has fewer side effects. In regards to
the alternative therapies she is taking- I know of NO data to suggest that
they will be useful. However, they have few side effects and therefore I
would not be against having them continued. Thank you for using
oncologychannel and good luck.
