SleepingDear doc,
I have two questions for you. Some websites suggest that it is better to sleep a lot during depression while others suggest that sleep deprivation is good for it. What is the correct thing to do? Now that I am suffering from depression am I more prone to suffer from bereavement reaction?
Re: SleepingSecond question first. You would be more sensitive to bereavement.
The sleep question involves two different aspects of sleep. If a depressed person is deprived of sleep for a day, they seem to improve for a day or so. They then revert back to depression. This is in the context of an experimental situation. This is what is meant by the sleep deprivation effect. In real life, 8 hours or so of sleep every night is very important to maintain functioning in the long haul. So sleep deprivation in the long run is not good for depression.
