What are artifacts and are they common?

Artifacts are distortions of the various images that are generated in radiology. In CT, common artifacts are streaky lines that are reflected off metal objects in the body such as fillings in the teeth, orthopedic devices and the like. Certain failures of the equipment itself can cause artifactual shadows also.
