constant headaches

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Oct 16, 2005 11:11 am

I'm 20 and have had a bad headache for over 4 months. Nothing I've taken has made any difference. It never goes away, but sometimes it is worse than usual. It feels as if my brain is trying to break through my forehead, constantly pushing outwards. Then sometimes it feels as if there's something like a finger pressing on the inside of my skull at certain points on my head as well (usually temples, or at the soft bit at the top of my spine). Sometimes I'll be sitting quietly and it sort of jabs and is so painful I shout 'OWWWWWW'.

The headache gets worse if I bend down to pick something up, or if I move quickly, or anything like that. I'm also finding it more difficult than usual to hear on the telephone, and sometimes can't hear what's being said by someone right next to me, and my vision (which is usually more than perfect) is often fuzzy. I'm feeling sick a lot but have only vomited two or three times since the headache started. I'm not able to eat as much. I also have a strange sensation at the top of my nose, as if I need to sneeze, but that's only started in the last month or so.

I went to the doctor three months ago, when it was mainly just the headache that was bothering me, and they said to go back if I developed any other symptoms like nausea or hearing/sight problems, but when I did they didn't seem bothered. I've been referred to a neurologist, which has worried me a lot. I'm going out of my mind with worry now, thinking it could be all sorts. Would they have sent me to the neurologist if they didn't think much was wrong? I've been able to think of nothing but 'what if?' for weeks. Should I be worried?

I wouldn't be worried. As it sounds as if your primary care doc has run out of ways to care for you. So the next reasonable thing to do for all involved would be to refer you to a Specialist and that is what has been done. Worry once they give you a reason to worry otherwise, you'll make your headache worse...good luck.

Don't be worried about the neurologist....they are just there to rule organic things out (by doing cat-scans or EEG's). I went to a neurologist, and got all that stuff done. I also ended up getting off the meds he prescribed because they medication made me feel worse than the headache itself.

My daughter is 12 and developed a headache while playing soccer in October 07. It is all day 24/7 and ranges from dull to migrane, mostly a 3-4 on a scale to 10. We have been to the Neuro. He calls it Chronic Daily Headache. He says it is a real condition and the pain is real. It says this is quite common although I had never heard of it before she came down with it. She has a lot of nausea and was put on ciproheptadine(sp?) and it has helped with that. We have tried amytriptaline, topamax and now she is on Depokote. She only attends school till 11am. She needs more sleep. She can't participate in any activites because it makes her head hurt worse. She has stretched herself trying drama and that is about to become too much. I put her to bed with many tears tonight. No one understands at school, and she has no friends now. You know how important friends are to a young teen and the medication doesn't help. I've been doing a lot of research on this CDH and I'm very concerned that it won't go away. We have tried Chiropractor, cranial sacral therapy and soon starting hippotherapy(on horseback). So far for testing we have negative CT scan of head and sinus, upper GI and h-phlori test. She is scheduled for an endoscopy next month. I'm still pushing for more test! It is just so hard to believe that one day you wake up with a headache and never get rid of it. AFter giving this last medication a try, we have to switch Neurologist because this one will only try 3 medications.
So--the neuro is the next step and I pray you get one that is familiar with this condition.
