headpain need help

Post a new topicby schilmman on Wed Aug 01, 2007 7:36 pm

Over the last 5 years, i have had pain in the back of myhead, on the right. It feels like someone is pressing a blunt object into the back of my head, and at the worse of it, i can hardly sit, stand or even walk.
The Pain recently has spread threw to my face, mainly in my lower jaw and up to my ears. I am tired all the time from the pain, when i am sitting or standing, and also i have trouble with my balance while walking, and i can only stand for short periods of time.
I also have pain in my middle lower spine, with pain in my right side of my leg, something like nervous leg syndrone. One odd thing tho, when i lay down in bed, the pain in my head stops but the pain in my leg and back still hurts.

Now i have had mri's, xray's, ctscan that show nothing unusal there, except for mild arthrits, which the last neuro doctor i saw told me that it had nothing to do with my head... I have seen 3 neuro doctors and none of them can tell me what is going on. I have also seen a dentist about my jaw pain, but I was told it wasn't linked to my head pain.
I have also seen a ENT and that showed to be not related to my headpain....I don't know where to turn next...
I am looking for others who have had this type of problem and/or doctor who has any idea what is going on....I am at my wits end...Please if you have any idea what this is, please contact me at my email address....Please.

thank you in advance....

Have the looked at your inner ear as a source, did your dentist rule out TMJ?

Yes, TMJ was ruled out, and both ears were checked with nothing found.
So far i have seen 8 neuro doctors, and several ent and dentists...they all can not explain what is going on.
I went threw something like this before, but it was like migraine type headaches that would come and go....I suffered with that for 30 years, before 1 doctor found that it was a deviated syptum, and once this was repaired, i had no more headaches....BUT...
After 2 years this new problems have showed up but does not go away, and only strong drugs seem to help, yet i am at a level of pain meds that scare my doctor...

I know that there must be at least one doctor or person that has come across this before and was treated, but finding that person(s) has been very hard...I don't want to suffer with this for another 30 years....i just can't take that again.....
I am even going as far as bringing in the health dept to chk my house to make sure that it is nothing in my house causing this problem, like a fungi infection or something else...

but thank you for being the frist to answer....

Having suffered with chronic daily headaches as well as occasional migraine symptoms, know that I empathize with your suffering. I, too, have had numerous MRI and CT scans, as well as sinus surgery, pain blockers, biofeedback, accupuncture and meditation to help reduce the pain - all with little or no results.
None of the physicians I've seen (Internists & Specialists) have a clue as to cause and finally decided that my headaches are idopathic and I'll have to live with it. I have been on Ultram for more than ten years - was on Viocodin for six years prior to that and all pain medicine takes the edge off, but never makes the headache go away.
Occasionally, I have had a day or two where I felt normal and it was euphoric. Sadly, it did not last long but gave me a glimpse into what my life was like prior to living in pain.
My headaches started in my late 20's and I will be 60 this year. That is a long time to suffer but I decided years ago that I was not going to let pain control my life. Even on days I would like to stay in bed, I get up, shower and dress and make my life go on. We have so few days on this earth that I refuse to waste even one. I have found that unless I simply can't get up (these are days that I have vomiting and need ice packs and quiet) I find something else to take my mind off of my pain.
I am sorry that I am unable to offer any help and perhaps have disallusioned you with my story, but know that you are not alone and that you can manage even with pain.
I hope you find an understanding physician who accepts you as NOT CRAZY and will work with you on getting some relief. I once had a Neurologist tell me that "it's all in your head" and then he laughed and walked out the door. Were I a litigious person, I'd have called my attorney at once and taken him before the medical board, but I just didn't feel like it at the time. He's still in practice in Houston and probably still thinks he's funny!
All the best,

i am now 51 years old, and like you i have suffered with pain for years, but it seems like doctors are lost in what to do when you come in with non specif pain that is not listed in thier little medical books.
I know i am not the only one who suffers with pain that doctors can not find or even believe in, yet when your in pain, you just want it too stop and find relief....There needs to be new research into pain like ours, and find what is causing the pains that some people suffer from that is not listed, catorgized or even understood.
Many people suffer without need and some doctors just seem to not care...they send ya to a pain doctor and let them drug you up, with out a real diagnois!!!
We need help, and i only wish these doctors could feel our pain, to know what we suffer from and then understand what we go threw....
sorry i am rambling now....

thank you for your reply, anyone else out there feel like i do about needing help and research? if so, let your voice be heard....maybe some doctor will hear us and take the time to help us find the cause to our undiagnosed pains...MAYBE!!

I think maybe you have several issues going on. You can tell when a Doctor looses interest & just wants return visits(money)
I get that to young, dont look to be sick look.
I (35yrs old) myself have had tension headaches with pain around the eyes (Had 2 eye tests when I first started hurting) since the late 90s (like someone punched you in the center of the back of the head) but I think Ive got some control on it with reduced caffine intake, neck exercises learned from physical therpy, muscle rub & a Tens unit inwhich exercises your neck muscles(instant relief but will make muscles somewhat sore but worth it)
I also have cronic jaw pain (ear area) since a industrial accident (about 15min shy from being dead on the spot if friends hadnt found us) from a H2S gas exposer in 02 inwhich I stayed in intensive care for 4-1/2 days in a induced comma. I sometimes get sharp pain from that neck area to my jaw. Ive had all 4 wisdom teeth removed with no relief. Done a MRI & been to a School Of Dentistary with no help. As for drugs, I feel like a genie pig. Pain meds didnt work for me but antiflamatorys like Vioxx worked well intill it was taking off the market & so I take ibuprofen at 2400-2600mg a day. My mind races (if u have heard the frase) & getting to sleep is hard for me so I take Elavil. When I get enough sleep I dont feel depressed. Deep sleep is when your growth hormone is released for muscle repair. Ive been though Biofeedback twice & found my jaw is at rest (no tension on the face sensors) with my mouth slightly open, & so I wear a Split at night. I dont grind my teeth but I do clinch my jaw muscles (with my mouth open) alot during the day inwhich is hard to stop. Riding my bicyle for exercise makes me feel better mentally & physically but I been slacking lately due to knee surgury. Cardiovascular activity longer than 40min. creates an increased production of Endorphins inwhich in your bodys antidepressant & a aerobic work out produces Enkephalins inwhich is a pain killer that is 12 times more potent than morphine The 1st couple of miles is the hardest for me but even though I push for 12miles & have done 21miles. Ive had a allergy blood test by Elisaact.com & found I had strong reactions to Nutmeg inwhich I didnt know along with some moderate ones. I just had a allergy skin test done & I am allergent to dust mites inwhich I am taking the steps. I think my jaw is my problem area & everything Ive done is to build my immune system & coup with the pain. Im hoping to try injections into my jaw next if I can get a doctor to agree to it. I found this site inwhich gives me some hope but is so far away. www.headaches.com
I just found this about ibuprohen inwhich dont look good http://www.mindandmuscle.net/mindandmuscle/magpage.php?artID=108
Im tired of hurting to & it makes you numb as in not caring. My family is what keeps me together.
