Signs and Symptoms

In most cases, infection with human papillomavirus does not cause symptoms. People who are infected with genital HPV often do not even know that they are infected and that they might be spreading it to their sexual partners.

In other cases, HPV infection poses a serious health risk. Certain types of HPV are more likely to cause genital warts cervical cancer, other types of genital cancers (e.g., penile cancer, vaginal cancer), and anal cancer.
