Should I have a hysterectomy at 26??

Post a new topicby livingwith on Wed May 13, 2009 12:39 pm

I have been living with very painful periods ever since I had my 3rd child and had my tubes tied. I’ve tried using different birth controls but they to have seemed to make me sick and cause pain. I know I’m young but i had my tubes tied for a reason and don’t think, or actually I know i can’t live with this pain much longer. I’ve had testing done and everything has come back normal so my options are to either have a hysterectomy or live with this pain. I know the an...Read the full article

I'm a 31 yr old women how just had a hysterectomy last week on May 13th. Like you I have 3 children and not only were my tubes tied but I had an endometrial ablation as well. My periods weren't painful but they were irregular and heavy. Sometimes I would bleed for 3 weeks out of the month and have only one week off instead of the other way around the way it should be. Aside from that I had no other problems; all my test and ultrasounds were negative. But every month I would dread being a women. After the ablation my bleeding stopped and I would just spot for a period. That worked for about a year and a half until a few months ago when the bleeding picked up again. Contraceptives which are supposed to help would just throw my hormones off and I would never get the desired effect. That includes the Depo shot, IUD, and pills. So that's when I made the decision with my Doctor to go ahead and perform a total hysterectomy leaving my ovaries in. Before the surgery I didn't feel like it would be any emotional concerns because my family was complete anyway. However, I have to admit that thinking about it has made me tear up a few times in the past week. It just seems more final then the tubal. I guess I may be grieving the loss a little. Anyway, since I'm only one week post-op, I can't tell if I made the right decision or not but I can say I don't regret it so far. I hope this helps and I pray that whatever choice you make that its the right one for you. Take care!

After dealing with fibroids, endometriosis and ovarian cysts for twenty years and many different treatments, I have come to the conclussion of having a radical hysterectomy. I know I want children but also have thought about adoption or fostering. I probably couldn't get pregnant with all the treatments and surgeries I have had through the twenty years. My surgery will be right after labor day of 2009 because of people at work needing six weeks off also. Labor day seems like a long way away but it will be here before I know it.
