Don't know what to expect, hysterectom 1/28/10

Post a new topicby femaleissues on Mon Dec 28, 2009 6:03 pm

Hi,

I started with irregular periods & pelvic pain back in 2007 & have had 2 laparoscopies looking for endometriosis & was getting ilioguinal nerve block injections, have tried lupron, anti depressants & My local doctors didn't know how to help.
I went to a doctor in Philadelphia, & he did an ultrasound & ordered an MRI & he believes I have adenomyosis & now I'm scheduled for a hysterectomy in a month.

To all of you who have had a hysterectomy, mine will be laproscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy if all goes well. Could you tell me what I'll be like afterwards?

Do you bleed alot after the procedure, do I need to buy Pads? Did you use alot of pain killers?
How long till you went back to work? Mine is being done for Chronic pelvic pain. Did any of you notice a change in the pelvic pain?

Any tips to get me through this?

thanks

Surgery is over so here's what happened.

Doctor said to take blood pressure meds and a vicodin with tiny bit of water prior to surgery. there was no bowel prep and I didn't get shaved. they did the laparoscopy assisted vaginal hysterectomy. things went ok, the doctor believes I have adenomyosis, he said the uterus was like mush. the chronic pelvic pain that i had, he still won't guarentee that it's gone.

I took slippers & bathrobe, I didn't use them. the nurses put a towel & pad between my legs, bleeding wasn't too bad. I did take ear plugs & that worked well because they put me in maternity ward because the doctor is an obgyn & works in that ward, Crying babies & beeping IV machines was definately helped by ear plugs.

I had a horrible time urinating before I left & have had to cath to get things flowing.

I did move too much in my sleep and accidently pulled out my IV. My hand felt wet & it was a combination of the iv dripping & the blood soaking my bed, sheets, my gown.

It was nice they had a pain killer drip in the one IV so I was able to just push and keep myself sleepy. They kept both my ovaries.

It's day 3 since surgery & sitting, peeing & bm's are a problem, I need to sit sideways to not have pain, laying or standing is the best. I don't look bad on the outside & I catch myself doing things out of habit, like bending & things, so I do get sore in evenings, I do tire quickly & take lots of naps. my nightbors have been bringing food each night & that's been a big help.

The drive home was painful, pulling out at stop lights & breaking really put stress on the abdomen, I plan on staying home for at least 2 weeks.

that was my experience.
