Dear Dr.
Do you know of any other machine which does not cause such discomfort when screening for breast cancer The machine that compress the breast tissues is very painful and a horrible procedure.

Unfortunately at this time there really isn't an alternative for breast screening other than mammography. MRI and ultrasound are both helpful in certain circumstances, but for routine screening there is no replacement for mammography.

Could you please enlighten me what is the difference between Digital Mammograms and the conventional Mammograms? Also what is the Image Checker R2? And what is it use for?? Can the CT scan macine screen for breast cancer too??

Digital mammograms require the same process of positioning and compression. The difference is the way the images are processed. Conventional mammograms are analogue images processed on x-ray film. Digital mammograms are digital images that can be manipulated in all sorts of ways before placed on film. One of the ways of processing the information is by passing it through a computer-aided device such as the R2 image checker. What the R2 does is scan the image for masses and for calcifications. Then it compares what it has seen to what is stored in its computer as normal and abnormal. It then flags those areas for the radiologist.
CT is poor for mammography because its resolution is no where near the resolution needed for mammography. It is occasionally used in certain cases where cross-sectional imaging is needed.
