Question about cysts

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Aug 04, 2001 12:51 pm

On Monday, I had my third mammogram (Ages 38, 40, and now 41). When the technician compared my mammogram to the one that I had last year, she said that there was a dark spot which hadn't been there before. At the time, I had 2 more films taken. Yesterday, a nurse called me up and told me to have a breast ultrasound because some cysts were in my breast, and the doctor wanted to make sure nothing is wrong. Thinking back, I have had several cysts and was wondering about them. 5 years ago, I was pregnant, and my daughter had a cyst on the left ventrical of her brain. To this day, she has been delayed in most areas of daily living. Over 2 years ago, I had a cyst on one of my ovaries. I also had some tests done because of severe headaches, and some small cysts were on my brain. Also, I had another cyst on my ovaries last fall. Most of these were nothing to be concerned about. I would have never known that I had the cyst on my breast if I wouldn't have had the mammogram. I do regular breast examinations, and can not feel anything abnormal. Do some people have a tendency toward having cysts? Is this something that runs in families? Could you tell me what causes them to come, and if there is something that I can do to prevent them? I am a very healthy person, and take good care of myself. I weigh 126 pounds, and am about 5'6" tall. Thank you for your response.

Benign breast cysts are very common and do, I think, run in families from mother to daughter at least to some extent. The only complication is that they are often confused with cancers. There is nothing that I know of that would prevent them from developing. I do not know why they develop.
Ovarian, renal cysts and cysts within the brain are very different things and completely unrelated.
