Is 56 too old to not have gone through menopause?

Post a new topicby lotsa? on Tue Nov 13, 2007 2:53 am

I went to the gyn today to get a 2nd opinion on a mass clearly felt in my uterus. Doctor confirmed and said that I should have gone through menopause the suspected fibroid tumor is growing and a hysterectomy is the answer. Doesn't feel right to me. First time I've seen him. Any suggestions out there? I bleed heavy but is for a normal 5-6 days and then nothing. Periods come every other month.

No 56 is not too old. The age range of 45-55 is a general guideline. The women in this group are the majority and therefore they have set the "standard". Some women start earlier, some enter later. When I meet women patients, if they are under 60, I ask them if they have begun menopause. Mostly the asnwer is yes, but there are a fair share of "no's in the group as well.

Lotsa -

When I was 26yrs old my uterus was removed because of debilitating periods. I "started" at age 12. I have just begun menopause, and I will be 59 yrs old next month. I too am surprised at going through this at this late age. I'm hoping to learn more about it here in this forum.
