Status Migraines - 10 years old

Post a new topicby swaites on Sun Mar 16, 2008 2:18 pm

I am looking for parents of children who have been diagnosed with Status Migraines or adults who suffered with Migraines as a child. My son was diagnosed at age 8. He takes 400mg of Motrin, Tylenol 3, and 2.5mg of Zomig for each Migraine When they go status, he is admitted into the hospital and placed in a morphine induced coma. Now that we are in puberty, he seems to be getting worse. I really would like to talk with someone.

I don't know if my daughter has a 'status migraine' but my she's had a continuous migraine for 5 solid weeks. She also has RSD in her left leg, and the Dr. said that it is causing the migraine. He put her on Elavil and told us to be patient. She's missed school all this time....5 wks. I have been searching high and low on the web for help. I've read about Status migraines, and actually thought this is what she has but I don't know if she should be in an ER or not.

My son has three levels of pain. First is his headache....aching in his frontal lobe and dizziness. He takes 400mg of Motrin for this level. Recovery is within about an hour. Second is a migraine....pain his frontal lobe, dizziness, sensitive to light, sound, and movement. He takes Tylenol 3 for this level. These leave him very lethargic. He usually sleeps for an hour or so after these ease off. Third is Status....such severe pain that his body begins to shut down, vommitting, tremors/muscle spasms, screaming, sweating. rapid heartbeat, breathing problems, etc. He takes 2.5 mg of Zomig for this level. If he does not recover within 30 minutes, he is transported to the ER and placed into a Morphine induced coma for 72 hours. His screams will haunt me until the day I die.

I am soooo sorry that your daughter suffers from such a difficult situation. It seems so hard for them to be so little and yet have experienced so much pain.

That is a lot to swallow for such a young child! My daughter hasn't had anything like that with her headache. She just has a continuous pounding and cannot tolerate sound. At first she couldn't stand for water to come down on her head, but that seems to have resolved itself. Today was her first day back at school for 5 weeks, and she just went for one hour. I wonder if there is a support group(as parents) for this that you can join. I'm so sorry about your son's condition. It sounds awful.

Maybe we could start a group on Yahoo for mothers of children with migraines. Let me know if you are interested and I would be glad to set one up for us!

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ChildrenandMigraines

This link should take you there. If not, go to yahoo.com and look for the link on the left side of the page for "groups". The name of the group is CAM - Children and Migraines. It may take us some time to get if up and running but it could really be beneficial to alot of us.

I am so very sorry that this delibatating disease is also happening in young children.

I have suffered with migraines for 23 years, my first one at 15 with the onset of my cycle. I have only just learnt about "Status Migrainous" & now understand that this is what I suffer & I am still searching for answers & treatments that may allow me to live without fear & dread of my Migraine week.

The ED does nothing for me other than give me fluids & send me home, but not after waiting 8 hrs in the brightly lit waiting rooms, so I no longer go there & just stay at home, but nothing really works for me which is why & am still searching.

wishing you all the best with your children & finding treatments that work for them
