my doctor had just told me that she thinks i have PID i have been put on tablets (doxycycline) in hope that my symptoms will go, ive done some reading on PID and found out that infertility can be a problem from PID, its been longer then a month since my stomach pain started and only now PID has come into the picture. im only 17 and dont plan on having children right know but ive always planned to have them, is there anyways i can find out if im infertile, i much rather know now then in a couple of years when im ready to start a family

hi sammie ..just while im in my email ...your question came up so i can answer you. You have been put on doxycycline becuse you have sti chlamydia ..(i had it ) . The medication you have been given will *only* treat your sti ..not PID . I carnt understand why your doctor has told you you have PID but has only given you treatment for an sti ..if you have PID and chlamydia you should be taking..doxycycline ..metronidazole and ofloxacin the last two madications i mention are for PID .

Please do let me know if your taking anything else . You can have chlamydia without getting PID which i suspect thats what you have or they would of given you medication for that . PID can result if the sti chlamydia is not treated but at the time being you have been given that treatment . Did she def say you had it .

i have had all the tests done for an STI i had my results back last week everything came back negative my docs knew that before they put me on doxycycline.
ive had the stomach pain for over a month now its getting worse but she def said i had PID she printed pages off on it and explained it to me
im so confused now :S

Hi again ..im confused about this myself ..becuse the treatment for sti chlamydia is doxycycline tho others are used . If you have PID it seems really strange that you would just be given doxycycline . Its a bit hard becuse you didnt say how many of those you have been told to take ? is it 3 or 4 pills or two weeks .

With my PID and you do have to take generally two typess of antibiotics are given for that ofloxacin and metronidazole ..thats a 2 week course of 400mg and you have to take them a number of times a day ..if a person has chlamydia as i did ..i took doxycyline for two weeks it may have been more .

if i had just been given doxycycline ..that would NOT have cured my PID ..people can take a couple of doxycyline 3 or 4 or one dose given at GU clinic to get rid of chlamydia ...if your having symptoms of PID which you are and have been told you have , you need to go to your A and E department and see a doctor about this or out of hours surgery . Are you in the UK ..im presuming you are ..take your packet of medication with you and show them ...tell them your drs name and adress of GP surgery and tell them you have been diagnosed with PID ..its vital you go as soon as possible ..some strange things can happen regarding GP's ...you need to follow this up ...but its hard for me to tell anything becuse im not a GP and i dont know how many doxycyline you have been given and for how long .. Where did you get your sti test done ? at a GU clinic and then they gave you doxycyline ? i would of thought that was for sti .why have you got PID ..there is a reason ..sti are the culprit ..or recent or past abortion ? surgery have you had surgery ..what is the reason you have PID . Have you had unproteceted sex ...did you develop any symptoms with urinating and discharge ?
If possible please do give a little more info ..so i could try to help a bit more if i can ..

Hi ..just want to add this ..you know when you said ..my doctor told me i had PID ..she printed off pages and explained it to me " ...what did she explain ? did she just say you have PID ! and that was all she said ? ..or did she tell you ..you have PID and the reason is ect ect ect ...???

When you had your sti tests ..how did the doctors know you didnt have an sti *before* you tested ..if your in the UK you generally have to go to GU clinic ..you said you were tested for ALL sti ..what sti tests did they perform at the GU clinic ? there are separate test for different things .

If the doctor at the GP sugery gave you doxycycline before you went to the GU clinic she may of suspected you had sti chlamydia if you tested after you had taken that .or while you were taking it ..that can alter test results ...did you do a postal urine kit only ? or did people perform these tests for you ..you need people to do this for you not home testing or buying a test over the counter .

Have you got thrush symptoms ..or did you have ? ...im just wondering how the doctors knew you didnt have any infection before you tested for sti ..??? and what did she explain on the printed sheet to you ..did that sheet get faxed through from the hospital to your GP surgery ?

Another one thats imprtant ..are you using any internal contracepton ..do you have a coil fitted ? has it been removed ?

ive had stomach pain for over 4 weeks now, they gave me bowle tablets first and nothing changed then i had blood tests done which showed i had a high white blood count so i have an infection somewhere i was sent to the GUM clinic to get checked for STI's when i was waiting for my results i was in so much pain i went back to the docs and they gave me tablets to get rid of womb infections but that didnt work in the mean time my results came back negative and i went back to the docs after finnishing the last set of tablets with no change thats when they told me it prob was PID and i was given the doxycycline, im taking one 100mg capsule twice a day for 14 days. its my fourth day of taking them with no change whats so ever if anything my symptoms are worse. i hope thats helps you a little more and thanks so much for replying.
by the way i am in the uk lol

im using the pill and i know that the tablets im taking can interfer with them but the only other thing i use are condoms

i dont know about having a STI before but ive only ever slept with one person and the same with him and before we had unprotected sex we were both check out for STI's.
i rang the GUM clinic for my results she just said that everything came back negative. the GP rang the clinic before i went and told me i would be tested for everything.
i have no symptoms of thrush, never have had anything wrong down there as far as i know.
so i had the results back before i was given the doxycycline, when she explained about PID it looked like paper was off a website to me, she said that some women have a bacteria that can cause PID and seeing as ive had the tests for STI's she thinks thats how i got PID.

Hi again and nice to post to another lady from the UK ..just hoping you get better as soon as possible .

Reading your posts , i have to admit your story has got me a little confused as to regarding why your doctor is using doxycycline ? *only* . You see the think is , i understand you said you have been given pills for a womb infection was it metronidazole and ofloxacin two different packets of pills ...those two are the treatment to cure the condition of PID ..you say that your doctor gave you these tablets , but they were not working , sometimes and it sounds like this in your case and it was *the same* with myself ..i had to begin another course of metronidazole and oflozacin in fact i had to do a few courses , becuse with PID *sometimes ONE course of these tablets are not enough to get rid of all the bacteria or should i say a little bit can be left behind and pid will carry on or return ..it happens very often that women have to do another course ..i mean its not unusual to do so . Regarding the doxycycline i would of thought that would be given for sti infections or urinary tract infectons but you state that you have never suffered from anything like UTI or you may like to call that bad cystitis or was on antibiotics like penicillin and others to clear that ..thats bwaht i carnt understand . Why your doctor is trying to treat PID with doxycycline and at the dose your taking . I took i have an old box here my dose of doxycyline was 1 capsule twice day for 12 day - thats 24 100mg doxycycline ..i took more but i had them in hospital in fact im not quite sure how many but the main thing was that was to cure chylamydia ..which i understand you say you havent got any sti .im just trying to make a point that if your taking these i would of thought you had UTI infections and youd be showing signs or sti which you state you have not had ? in short its not the treatment for PID ..i just dont understand why your doctor gave you these ...

To be honest with you ..i would go and see somebody else about this not your GP ..things can and do go wrong i was told i had no sti aftyer testing at my GU clinic including HIV test and i DID have one and i went on to develop PID becuse they didnt get it right ..which was a disgrace ! what i would do is go somewhere else like well woman or family planning clinic they can examine you and they will tell you about the correct medication for this PID ..becuse if your suffering from acute PID its wrong what you have been given ..i really feel strongly about this or better still why dont you walk into a and e wait for an hour or two see the triage (sp)? nurse /ndoctor and explain that you have been diagnosed with PID and look what youve been given ..thats the thing to do ..and what a lot of ladies on this forum do including myself ..Doctors arenot knowlegeable here - some of them arent ..and it is very hard to understand the language if your doctor is foriegn ..i am certainly in no way a racist whatsoever can i stress that but i cannot understand pakistani doctors ..i do have to ask them to repete if it is hard to understand ..you may be better agin going to a and e ..i went on for two years interrible pain ..

Please dont waste time and go and see somebody else ..if they want to test you agin for anything let them ..
I would love to help further but im not a doctor but i really cannot see how just doxy will cure your PID ..you need another course of oflozacin and metro ..and you need also to be on doxycycline as i was ..i took the three ..

Please do let me know how you get on and do visit the hospital ..they are experts a GP is ONLY a GP .
