RSD early diagnosis

Post a new topicby livingwith on Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:52 pm

I had a very bad break to my right wrist and developed what I learned is RSD or complex regional pain syndrome. I was fortunate enough to get an early diagnosis that allowed me to research on the internet to find something that would help me. After several months my pain was very much reduced, I take only one anti-inflammatory per day, more when needed; the colour of my hand is returned to more normal; the severe swelling has more or less gone.
I think the early diagnosis was really key...Read the full article

I foundyour suggestions helpful to try, especially the swelling reduction. I have
developed some skin and tissue reactions to wrist fracture/surgery (plate) and the
orthopaedist labeled it RSD. I currently have no pain with it, but limited movement
from the swelling. I am trying the castor oil packs and ice treatments too. Any advice is welcomed.

My son had RSD for 3 months and is now cured thanks to this physiatrist in NY.
If you live anywhere near NY and are interested in more info you can reach me at [moderator note: e-mail address has been removed]
This Dr. is one of 2 people in the country that treat and cure RSD in children and young adults.
He is expensive but takes some insurance and only has success if you have had RSD for 4 months or less.
I am very relieved as my son couldnt move his hands and had to take a medical leave from college.
Now 4 months later he is back playing piano and pain free.
The treatment involved physical therapy 5 days a week for 2 weeks and then once a week and visits to the gym 2 times a day. It worked. The Dr. designed a specialized exercise program for my son.No drugs were necessary. Its a miracle as 4 other Dr.'s were clueless.

My name is Bev and I too have developed RSD in my hand due to a compound fracture of my right wrist and 2 broken bones in my right forearm of which one needed a graft. My fall happened in August of 2008. I was diagnosed with RSD in November. Your letter is very encouraging and I too keep those fingers moving as much as possible and I wear an edema glove 80 percent of the time, it seems to help with the swelling and sooths discomfort in my finger joints and palm of my hand. I will try some of your suggestions. I also made my own heat wrap. I took a white sock, put some brown rice in it and tied a knot in it then put it inside another white sock and tied a knot in it. Be careful not to add to much rice because you want it to stay flexible. This can be heated in the microwave and it holds heat quite well. It's also flexible enough to contour to the hand. I'm trying my best to get better with the hopes of one day returning to work and having my life back again, pain-free.
